Users of the WordPress blogging and content management platform can now update their installations to version 2.9.2, released Monday. This version fixes one small bug, which would allow logged in users to view other users posts that have been put into the "Trash". It is not an essential fix, though updating is recommended.

Users of the WordPress blogging and content management platform can now update their installations to version 2.9.2, released Monday. This version fixes one small bug, which would allow logged in users to view other users posts that have been put into the “Trash”. (The trash was added with the release of 2.9 to provide an extra barrier before permanently deleting posts and pages.)

Thomas Mackenzie alerted us to a problem where logged in users can peek at trashed posts belonging to other authors. If you have untrusted users signed up on your blog and sensitive posts in the trash, you should upgrade to 2.9.2. As always, you can visit the Tools->Upgrade menu to upgrade.

Though this obviously is not an essential fix, and 2.9.1 blogs are still safe to malicious exploits, it’s a good idea to upgrade your blog, simply to keep yourself ahead of the curve. For more information on the importance of keeping your blog up to date, listen to WordCast’s original podcast episode 68: WordPress Safety and Security.

Ever since version 2.7, upgrading WordPress plugins and even the core of WordPress itself has been extremely simple. Users on most server configurations can simply click a few buttons and watch the magic happen. However, the same can't be said for themes. Premium theme retailer iThemes decided that this process needed to be simpler, so they released their Easy Theme Upgrades WordPress plugin, which allows you to upgrade a theme simply by uploading the new zip file.

Ever since version 2.7, upgrading WordPress plugins and even the core of WordPress itself has been extremely simple. Users on most server configurations can simply click a few buttons and watch the magic happen. However, the same can’t be said for themes. Though themes are usually quite stable, many developers, especially those of premium WordPress themes, update their products with new features, tweaks and bug fixes that you’ll want to install.

Premium theme retailer iThemes decided that this process needed to be simpler, so they released their Easy Theme Upgrades WordPress plugin, which allows you to upgrade a theme simply by uploading the new zip file.

After installing and activating the plugin, follow these steps to upgrade your theme:

Download the latest zip file for your theme. You can always download the latest version of any themes you’ve purchased on your member page.

Log into your WordPress site.

Go to Appearance > Add New Themes and click the Upload tab at the top of the page.

Select the zip file with the new theme version to install.

Select “Yes” from the “Upgrade existing theme?” option.

Click “Install Now”.

The plugin saves old theme files in a zip file for download later from your WordPress install’s media library, just in case you may have customized things. However, it doesn’t roll changes you’ve made over into the upgraded version of the theme – you’ll need to do all that again yourself. It’s available for free from the iThemes site, and soon from the WordPress Plugins repository.
